Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia 2011

Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia 750ML 2011
Sku: 15268

En 1875, Don Luis Pereira made his dream of producing fine grapevine varieties in the Maipo Valley come true. His best harvests were set aside to produce wines for his Reserva de Familia (Family Reserve). This Santa Carolina classic was the first Chilean wine to obtain recognition abroad: a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. This range currently offers wines from Chile’s different valleys and bears a tradition of over 135 years of quality. Reserva de Familia wines are concentrated and complex, with well-defined structures and classic typicities.

Deep, darkest ruby red color. The nose reveals a classic Cabernet with generous amounts of black cherry, plum, and cassis mingling with accents of mineral, cedar, dark chocolate, cedar, and toasted oak. The palate is in full accord with the nose delivering an intense and concentrated core of dry fruit with loads of earth, spice, and oak in support. Great Value

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia is a special wine in the winery, pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, still their top-of-the-range for the variety. It’s a classical Cabernet from Maipo, with aromas of tobacco, cedar wood, blackberry and some herbal, fresh notes, a medium-bodied palate with grainy tannins, and good freshness as well as some crunchiness. Vibrant and alive, this good value in Cabernet shows good typicity and overdelivers for its price. With time and air, the feeling is of a very ripe harvest. 200,000 bottles filled. Drinking the 1962 vintage of this very same wine was a real pleasure, a kind of Mediterranean Bordeaux with aromas of cured meat, paprika, smoke, cedar wood, cigar ash and balsamic notes with a medium-bodied palate with fully resolved tannins with balance, elegance and complexity. Santa Carolina has the luxury of having old wines they can investigate to rescue some of their traditions. Very smart to look back to confirm where you have to go in the future. I take my hat off to them. Well done! Drink now-2018.
