Tasting notes

Wine Enthusiast 93 points (Dec 2014)
Scents of bright red berry, violet, rose, orange peel, leather and a balsamic note all mingle in the glass. The smooth, savory palate delivers ripe black cherry, black raspberry, freshly ground white pepper, cinnamon and licorice alongside firm but polished tannins. It’s nicely balanced and very refined. Drink 2016-2026.

Chiarlo’s 2011 Barbaresco Reyna is a very pretty, entry-level wine. Sweet tobacco, crushed flowers, mint, sage and dried cherries lift from the glass in a silky, refined Barbaresco long on polish. The flavors are already a touch forward, which makes me think the 2011 will offer its best drinking over the next few years. Readers looking for a Barbaresco to drink now will find much to admire in the Reyna. All the elements fall into place gracefully. Hints of rose petal, mint, anise and orange peel linger on the soft, supple finish.
 Wine Spectator 88 points (Jun 15 2014)
Tightfisted and astringent, with stiff tannins offsetting the cherry, berry, menthol and tobacco flavors. Best from 2018 through 2027. 2,915 cases made.-BS

Wine maker notes
The highest expression of the finesse of the wine obtained from Nebbiolo grapes is unquestionably to be found in Barbaresco. Production of this wine is extremely limited, for only in the choicest positions in the communes of Barbaresco,Treiso and Nieve is it possible to plant Nebbiolo vineyards for its production. For many years Michele Chiarlo has pursued the fundamental principles for its production in this prestigious area: he has chosen the most suited terrains with excellent exposition; he has limited the yield per rootstock; he has followed with great care the vinification and ageing operations. These are the only ”secrets” behind Michele Chiarlo’s Barbaresco.
